18 Mar 06: ACSim (the "Sweatbox") released for ATC training
Over
the past several years, virtual traffic volume has grown tremendously. However it
is still very scattered, random and unreliable. To practice ATC efficiently there's
no replacement for controlling under the critique of a knowledgeable mentor or instructor,
so the members of VATSIM's Boston ARTCC suggested a program to simulate traffic.
To
implement that idea Chris Serio has come up with the ACSim, also known as the “Sweatbox”.
The ACSim (short for AirCraft Simulator) is a program that connects to a stand-alone
VATSIM server and allows an instructor to set up and control any number of IFR and/or
VFR aircraft. The student connects to the same server using the usual VATSIM controller
software and controls the “simulated simulated aircraft” in scenarios
presented by the instructor. VATSIM will be bringing the ACSim server online in March
2006, and ACSim will be made available to regional, divisional and subdivisional
staff to implement in local training programs as they consider appropriate. Members
will be informed of local arrangements by their divisional staff and instructors.
Further information can be found here.

12 Dec 05: Announcing the release of XSquawkBox,
and its approval for use on the VATSIM network.
Developed by Ben Supnik, XSquawkBox is a plug in for the X-Plane flight simulator (versions
6, 7 and 8), allowing users to fly on-line in X-Plane.
XSB for VATSIM features:
- Integrated voice
- Automatic voice room tuning with the com1 frequency
- Weather from VATSIM
- Integrated UI: the plug in appears entirely within the flight sim
- Easy installation: install the plug in and a new menu appears for XSquawkBox - no other apps to start or clutter
- Minimal UI: where possible things like transponder and radio tuning are done with the real x-plane panel and not a separate UI
- CSL: XSquawkBox has a CSL format for adding additional models to XSB's vocabulary
XSB is available at: http://www.xsquawkbox.net/xsb/

OneSky4 took place on 7 May 2005, click on above image for more info.
To use any of the ATC Clients, you will need a VATSIM account. If you do not
already have one, please visit http://vatsim.net to
register for an account. Within minutes you will experience a whole new dimension
of online flight.
